The Old Hakuginso Cabin
'I frequently remember my work with the snow of Mt. Tokachidake, and it seems as if I received nothing but beautiful impressions of that time.' —Dr. Nakaya Ukichiro, Snow
The Old Hakuginso Inn was a site frequently visited by Dr. Nakaya Ukichiro, when he was doing research on snow crystals, starting in December of 1933.
By observing snowflakes closely, it should be possible to learn much about the meteorological conditions of the area.
This Hakuginso Cabin is a facility which, as part of the Fukiage Hot Spring Recreational Facility, can be used and enjoyed by anyone. However, the cabin was first built as a facility for the Hokkaido Government, in January 1933.
Dr. Nakaya, learning that the cabin had been finished, took special notice of it, due to the fact that it was located at an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level, and because the temperature there in winter ranged from 10-15°C.
Places where snow crystals continuously accumulate without melting are perfect for research.
Two years later, on March 12, 1936, Dr. Nakaya reached the culmination of his research, and succeeded in creating the world’s first artificially manufactured snow.
'Snow crystals are a letter sent from heaven.'
Dr. Nakaya wrote about his endeavors at length, in his book, Snow, published by Iwanami Shoten Publishers.
