Ground Crater

Ground Crater is located in the middle of Mt.Tokachidake north west side. It is 600m in diameter, and is the largest one in Mt.Tokachidake.

Pyroclastic flows occurred twice 4,700 years ago, and 3,300 years ago. The crater was formed by those two volcanic eruptions.

The latter pyroclastic flow reached Shirogane Hot Springs in the lower part of Mt. Tokachidake. A gentle slope around Bogakudai is the topography formed by the pyroclastic flow.

There is a layer of soil by an eruption after Ground Crater formation.

Especially cinder, volcanic bomb, and lava are found there. Those stem from the latest volcanic activities from 1988 to 1989 in Mt.Tokachidake. Size of the largest volcanic bomb is about 20x10x2 meter. Some became like crust of baguettes called bread crust bomb. The crater is hollowed out in various places where volcanic bombs fell. It is called an impact crater.

You can find Ground Crater from the mountain trail. The crater is a very important place in considering volcanic activities and disaster management as the crater where the largest eruption occurred during the last 10,000 years.
