Hill in Tokachidake-Geopark area is a very Hokkaido’s scenery.

The hills consist of Biei Pyroclastic Flow Deposit and Pyroclastic Flow Deposit.
The reason that hills have gently-slop is related to a cold climate in Hokkaido. In Hokkaido, ground freezes in the winter, and melts in spring alternatively every single year. In the case that ground and rocks include water inside, ground and rocks crack because the volume increases as it cools,
Once ice melts, ground and rocks crumble along cracks. Rocks are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava, and it is referred to freeze-thaw cycle. Freeze-thaw cycle makes rocks break into shatters and terrain gentle.

There were cycles of ice age especially during a time period from one million years ago to two million years ago. This shows there was more intense crustal deformation.
