Ruins of the Old Nisshin Elementary School

Takuichi Kosaku, the protagonist of Deiryu Chitai (Mudflow Area), the novel by Miura Ayako, was said in the novel to have attended Nisshin Elementary School.

In 1911, the Fourth Kamifurano Education Center was built within Arai Farm, and in 1917, it was renamed Nisshin Elementary School.

The most significant event in the history of this school was the eruption of Mt. Tokachidake Volcano, on May 24, 1926.

When the eruption occurred, there Mt. Tokachidake was covered in a thick layer of snow.

The eruption caused part of the mountain to collapse. This in turn caused very hot water to shoot out of the mountain, melting the snow, and flowing down the mountain together with rocks and mud. This event is known as the Taisho Mudflow.

All school buildings hit directly by the mudflow were completely washed away and destroyed.

Of the 46 children enrolled at the school at that time, 11 perished.

On that day, Mr. Kikuchi (known in the novel as Mr. Kikukawa), a teacher at the school, was in Asahikawa on business, and survived without injury, but four of his family members could not be saved.

After the disaster, the school was swiftly restored. A new, temporary school building was constructed 4km from he site of the original school, opening on June 16th of that year.
